“Warwick in History” – On this date, March 14, 1898, occurred a fire in Warwick which showed that there was some great fire-fighting ability in the women of the village. A house on McEwen Street, owned by Dan Babcock and occupied by a Mrs. Hunter, caught fire in the woodwork behind the kitchen stove. It gained some headway before the alarm was sounded.
When the first member of the Raymond Hose Company arrived at their firehouse, Mrs. Myers was already there. She helped run out the truck and kept on helping to pull it until enough men gathered to take over the job. At the fire itself, the neighbors had formed a bucket brigade and had the fire pretty well under control by the time the firemen arrived. Several women also assisted in handling the buckets.
